Healthy greens over rice

We are so lucky to have a few new local veggie and vegan places finally open up in the Boston area. Some of my favorite meals are inspired by the simple nutritious meals at Life Alive. Here’s my version of one of one of their dishes. Check out their menu here and make your own versions at home!


Short grain brown rice, cooked according to package directions (or microwave if you need it fast) enough for 2 servings

large bunch of kale, chopped

1 head of broccoli, chopped

1 Tbsp flax seed oil or olive oil

1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice

1/2 Tbsp Bragg’s liquid aminos or Tamari (gluten free soy sauce)

1/2 tsp nutritional yeast


Use a wooden steamer, steamer basket or a large pot with 1 cup of water in it and steam the broccoli and kale until bright and slightly softened.

In a small bowl, mix the oil, Braggs or tamari, lemon juice and nutritional yeast. Stir well.

To serve, place the cooked rice in a bowl or plate and top with the steamed greens. Drizzle 1-2 tsp of the dressing mixture on top. You can serve as is or top with dried cranberries, fresh sliced avocado, pumpkin seeds or  crispy chickpeas (
